This Month’s Guest Editor – Sophie Mayer

Meet this month’s guest editor for our Good Things To Happen For Women In Film who has many strings to her bow. Sophie Mayer is the author of POLITICAL ANIMALS: THE NEW FEMINIST CINEMA (IB Tauris, 2015), and works with queer feminist curators Club des Femmes and film industry campaigners Raising Films. She is a regular contributor to Sight & Sound, The F-Word and Literal, and has a whole other life as a poet in which she co-edited Catechism: Poems for Pussy Riot (2012). Here she is in her own words…

In a month when 100 people, predominantly queer, trans and intersex people of colour, were shot in a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and in the UK, a female Labour MP was assassinated in the street, the cloud of toxic masculinity has hung heavy and we have desperately needed good news. Perhaps we can do a small honour to the spirit of Jo Cox, and to the spirits of the 49 dancers and lovers and community-builders who died at Pulse (say their names here) – by celebrating, quietly, what makes it worth carrying on.

While these candles can’t outshine the darkness (oh yeah, the British film industry is broxen as well), I hope they are beacons for you as they have been for me; that it can bring some light to your heart that, in the small, strange but significant corner of the world we call film, there are people working hard to make change, make everyone welcome, and make a better world.
