Meet Sorta Kinda Maybe Yeah!

Here at BTF, we’re inviting women doing fabulous things in the fight for better on screen rep to guest edit our monthly Good Things To Happen For Women In Film and this May, we welcomed Sorta Kinda Maybe Yeah to the editor’s desk! The trio, Charlotte Lowdell, Laura Kirwan-Ashman and Aya Arden-Clarke have an arsenal of talents from filmmaking, acting, graphic design and screenwriting and they’ve pooled their skills together to launch a hilarious web series. Here they are in their own words!

It’s no secret that the film industry is a white, male-dominated environment – its lack of diversity has been a hot topic for a while. Sorta Kinda Maybe Yeah was founded by three women in an attempt to tackle this issue and form a collective for females looking to create work and gain experience and skills in a supportive, non-judgemental environment. We have a DIY, guerilla style approach to filmmaking where we embrace messing up, facing fears, and where there are no stupid questions.

SKMY started when Laura Kirwan-Ashman and Aya Arden-Clarke made a one-minute funny film for the Met Film School Comedy Challenge. The film was shortlisted and writer Laura won a two day intensive filmmaking course. The entire film was written, shot, and edited in a total of around five hours and they thought to themselves, ‘Why the hell aren’t we doing this all the time?’ They then joined forces with multi-hyphenate Charlotte Lowdell to form SKMY.

The web series is our first project and was born out of a desire to see more diverse female experiences that we could relate to, something we feel is lacking from current mainstream media.

Representation is incredibly important, seeing people that look like you and stories that reflect your own has a massive impact on how you feel in your own skin, how you feel as a part of wider society, and how society feels about you. We by no means claim to represent the never-ending range and complexity of female experiences but we want to be some small part of the solution.
