Philippa Lowthorpe’s earned her stripes in the TV world with impressive directing credits such as Jamaica Inn and Cider With Rosie and was the FIRST woman to be awarded for Best Director for Call The Midwife in 2012. Her lengthy list of mini series and TV movies includes Five Daughters starring Natalie Press which follows the final weeks of the female victims of the Ipswich murders and won the 2010 Jury Prize at Raindance Film Festival.

This weekend marks the release of her nationwide cinematic debut – an adaptation of Arthur Ransome’s classic kid’s novel Swallows and Amazons! We were lucky enough to attend the preview screening earlier this month and were warmed to hear Lowthorpe reminding the audience, giddy with little girls, that they too could be writers and directors and that if she could do it – they can too!

Read the brilliant Catherine Bray‘s review for Variety in which she notes how ‘heartening’ it is to see Lowthorpe’s work being reimagined in a ‘new and more independent form’ here.
